A “dot” is the simplest of all graphic symbols in Western typography. In Chinese script, however, this symbol is represented by a 17-stroke character “dian”(點). This consists of the word “black” as its signific (left part) and the word “ to divine” as its phonetic (right part). To animate the Daoist notion of “the Order of Nature”, the stroke-sequence of this character is here reversed to return to its most lapidary simplicity—a dot.
